  5. The Golden Tip

Time management

You can only plan your run for a marathon only if you know where are the start and the endpoint. Similarly, you need to know or set a target for when you want to start preparing for the syllabus and by what time you want to finish the entire syllabus. I joined the 11th syllabus during June 2022 and according to the school management they had planned to complete the NEET as a whole syllabus for NEET 2024 by the 1st week of September 2023. So I had 16 months to prepare the content for NEET. Eventually, I was left with 8 months from the 1st week of September 2023 to the end of April 2024.

So, In short, that is 16 months of studying and 8 months of revision(including preparation for 12th Board exams).

I felt that this 16+8 scheme was comfortable because apart from studying, being able to recall and revise all the chapters that we have studied so far also plays a crucial role. So given 8 months to revise all the chapters that we might have forgotten since learning them at the start of the 11th, it is a blessing.

Goal Setting

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. You need to know the importance of goal setting. You need to know that it is the short-term goals and long-term goals that keep you on track. You need to fix your short-term goals, long-term goals, and weekly and monthly goals.

Short-term vs long-term goals

  • Short-term goals are goals that need to be achieved in 1- 2 weeks. My school management had weekly targets

For example,

  • For chemistry, if we are starting the atomic structure topic on Monday, then the management will set a target to complete till Schrodinger’s wave equation by Fridays and weekend exams on Sundays will be set based on the portion completed in that week.

  • For zoology, if we are starting Animal Kingdom on Monday, then the management will set a target to complete until chordates on Friday, and weekend exams on Sunday will be set based on the portion completed in that week.

  • These are the small weekly goals that we need to maintain and the Velammal management has done a great job in spacing out the syllabus curriculum so that it is a fast but manageable pace for the students to adapt to. So it is important to maintain these goals so that we are well aware of our time.

Long-term goals

  • Long-term goals are goals that need to be achieved in the long run of 2 or 3 months.

  • You need to set manageable targets like for example finishing 3 to 4 topics in 2 months based on which topics are more complex and which are easier to manage.

For example,

  • In botany, you need to plan to finish the easier topics like plant kingdom, morphology, and anatomy of flowering plants in 1 to 1.5 months so that more time can be allocated for the tougher conceptual topics like photosynthesis, respiration, plant growth, and development.

Doubt clarification

  • you should not be afraid or hesitate to ask anything to the respective faculty members, even for a small doubt there should not be any hesitation, a doubt is a doubt, it is the smallest things that make the difference. No matter how much they scold you, humiliate you, or ignore you, you should have the responsibility of your studies. It is your hands. It is up to you to understand how much your parents are working to pay for schools and wasting your opportunity of doubt clarification is like throwing their money down the drain and I strongly believe that no one wants to create such a situation for their parents.

The Golden Tip

  • How important it is to quickly get the attention of the faculty members through your impressive academic results. It is a golden rule of thumb(like Epling’s golden rule iykyk) The “toppers”, are the top performing students, and are always treated differently, they are segregated from the rest of the students.

  • The management always does this so that they can sharpen these students unleash their ultimate potential and secure the fancy AIRs. Everyone should strive to become one of them. Because everything changes, you won't realize it but soon everyone around you will realise. Your mindset will change. For example, when I was getting 640, and 650 I was satisfied but then when I saw my peers getting 680 and 690, I was pressured to score in those ranges of 680+. After months and months of work, getting 670 and 680+ became a norm for me. This is a positive side to peer pressure So what I can conclude is that it is important to challenge to yourself reach the league of the top-scoring students. This is what pushed me who I would consider an average student to exceed and go beyond my capacities.

  • It is for the greater good. Once you enter into that premium society, you will get to witness what hunger is, with what hunger students are working towards their goals. Your parents did not pay 3 or 4 or 5 lakhs for their sons and daughters to become mediocre, they want their children to shine as the brightest diamonds among all the other diamonds.
